Geotextiles

Why you need Geotextiles...

  •  Prevent soil loss behind or below a gabion structure.

  •  Prevent the loss of sandy soil in a river environment below a river mattress lining.

  •  Prevent sandy backfill soil moving through the gabion wall.

  •  Reduce the water velocity below a mattress structure in the river.

Protect the integrity of your gabion basket installation with high-quality geotextiles between your gabion structures and the soil. We supply only the highest quality of both woven and non-woven geotextiles for gabion installations and other applications.

These geotextile filter fabric materials prevent the migration of fine soils to the spaces between rock particles. The migration of fine soil into your gabion structure can cause subsidence problems below or behind the gabion structure in time if not applied correctly and will stir up problems – especially in sandy soils. Clay soils do not generally require a geotextile filter fabric as they seldom leach through the basket section. We recommend using a suitable geotextile where the gabion is in contact with earth, this will limit any movement of soils through a gabion structure. In soft soil foundations especially and wherever overlaps or joins are required, we suggest a minimum overlap of 300mm(1 ft).

We supply geotextile to all sites where gabions are used. Depending on the required structure of the gabion, we normally find that about 1-2m² of geotextile per m³ of gabion is required.

The following roll sizes are available:

2.65 m wide x 150m long (397.5m²) or 5.3 x 150 m.

Erosion Control Blankets

Why you need Erosion Control Blankets...

  • Prevent soil erosion on steep soil slopes.

  •  Keep the soil moist and stable during the initial growth phase.

  •  Stops unsightly erosion gullies on steep slopes.

  •  Easy and quick to install.

  •  Extra support for small seedlings, keeping them moist.

  •  Can be hyroseeded with local vegetation.

  •  Environmentally friendly.

  •  Economical to install.

These blankets promote vegetation growth when combined with your gabion structure, and help retain the important topsoil for vegetation growth. This range of products is of utmost importance in protecting the earth against soil erosion.

Their purpose is to keep the soil moist and cool during the initial growing phase of young plants and seedlings, encouraging vegetation growth before the soil is moved or transported away in heavy rains. Both the woven and non-woven blankets are eco-friendly and degrade into the soil over time, providing nitrogen into the soil during the initial growth phase.

We offer rolls of biodegradable soil blankets for installation in areas where soil erosion is a pressing problem on steep slopes or newly constructed fills. These blankets can be made of hessian, jute, coconut fiber and synthetic materials for a slightly longer lifespan. Ranging from a life span of about 6 months to 3 years for the synthetic blankets.

These products are laid over and pegged into the soil on steep slopes and promote water and fine soil particle retention and the subsequent support of plant root growth.

Roll sizes available are dependant on grade or product type requested, contact us for further information. The Coir blankets are supplied in rolls, 2m wide x 50m long, Soil Saver blankets are supplied 1.22m wide x 100m, product masses range from 200-450g/m2.

Sandbags

Why you need sandbags...

  •  Divert flood waters.

  •  Soil erosion gullies.

  •  Use local sand or soil infill.

  •  Prevent flooding of your home.

  •  Fill Gabions with sand filled bags.

  •  Very economical.

Sandbags are an ideal solution when it comes to soil erosion protection, and diverting floodwaters away from sensitive installations or homes. Especially where there is a lack of rock for gabion installations, soil/sand filled bags can be stacked together quickly using locally available sand to protect your home or river bank in times of excessive flooding and thundershowers. Sandbags prevent flooding and soil erosion, due to one simple fact, that sand, stone and soil being heavier than water, are not easily washed away in times of river floods.
Sandbags for dykes and berms should only be filled half full, as overfilled bags are less effective, and they can then be stacked together to hold down the soil and divert lager water flows away from the home or installation, kindly contact for more information.

Gabion Rock Supply

Why You Need Our Gabion Rock Supply

  • We supply the correct rock for gabions in terms of density and shape.

  • We have accounts with many different suppliers, and offer good quality rock and fast delivery to site.

  • We know whats required in terms of quality and volume to make your life easier.

  • Why waste your time, let us take the hassle away of finding a reliable rock source and supplier.

  • Gabion , rock and geotextiles are required to build great looking gabion structures, we thus supply all thats required.

  • Due to our purchasing power and good relations with the rock supply quarries we get the best price and quality available, which we pass onto you.

Quality Gabion Baskets require quality rock infill. We can offer suitable rock supply depending on the site for Gabion installation, often the rock supplier does not have rock stockpiled and we do try to provide the necessary information for obtaining the material. We also offer expert advice regarding the best rock specifications for your particular requirement.

The rock we recommend must be un – weathered and solid without flaking or weathering evident. The correct size to be used must be 100 – 250 mm size for gabions (for 0.5 or 1 m high baskets). With river mattresses the rock size is 60 mm – 2/3 the mattress thickness so that at least two layers of rock can be used in the mattress layer thickness, this is dependent on the mesh opening size and for the 80 x 100 mm mesh the minimum rock size is 80 mm. Small rock fragments must not be used on the surface of either gabions or mattresses in river course situations as the fine material will be removed in high water flows. Always check that the rock size is bigger than the hexagonal mesh opening, within the centre of a gabion basket smaller rock may be used and limited to the centre of the gabion only.

Soft rocks and brick fragments are not suitable due to its capacity to absorb water and soften over time, flat rock is usually not adequate as it does not provide for the same mechanical interlock in the gabion provided by blasted angular rock, rounded river rock is ok, however is does harm the environment after removal and it is more difficult to obtain a flat gabion facing.

Usually the rock density should be a minimum of 2.6 tons/m3, with an average void ratio of 35% (also allowing 30 % for waste/fines) we generally recommend about 2 tons of rock per m3. The rock should be placed as close to the packing position when offloaded from the truck to reduce double handling on sites, this sometimes becomes necessary and can delay the packing of the baskets. In our experience we have found that labor can pack 1 – 3 m3 of Gabion per man per day, to be conservative we generally allow for 1 man / m3 / day. The rock and labor prices normally amount to approximately 33% each of the final completed gabion cost, the other 33% is made up from the Galvanised basket cost, with PVC coated baskets, we add about 15% to the overall cost of an installed basket.
